In the framework of the France-Lithuania season 2024, an artist will be selected to reside for two months between September and December 2024 at the Villa Vassilieff in Paris. The professional researcher or writer will explore the role and impact of Lithuanian women artists in the 20th and 21st century and the cultural exchanges they were part of. The developed writings or research will be published on the website of AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions) and presented in an event format of the artist’s choice, like a conference, masterclass or roundtable.
Artnews.lt, an organisation analyzing and disseminating contemporary visual art, Echo Gone Wrong, a sub-organisation of Artnews.lt publishing about Baltic visual art, and AWARE have teamed up to create this opportunity and offer their expertise, resources and network to the future resident. The Lithuanian Culture Institute and the French Institute in Paris organize the project.
The Villa Vassilieff hosts the resource centre of AWARE and access to their 3,600 references on women and non-binary artists. It is a public space where visitors, research professionals and artists come together on a local and international level to question gender roles in art, making it a compelling location for the residents‘ living and working studio of 44 m².
The application requires a CV, a letter of motivation as well as a research proposal of not more than 500 words. In subsequent interviews, the selection committee will determine the winning artist out of the best applicants, who consults with the hosts about their period of residency. They receive a monthly allowance of EUR 900 as well as a roundtrip-ticket from the villa to Paris. The residency time is devided into intense working phases, networking with the academic, artistic and institutional contacts of the team, hosting the presentation event at the Villa Vassilieff and writing a research paper for the AWARE website.
Applications are to be sent to appelaprojets[at]aware-art.org
