Professional artists with experience in the agri-food sector under their belt and a drive to test innovative AI and tech solutions in real, industry-oriented environments can apply for this eight-month programme. Artists are required to be citizens of EU states, Sea Territories or countries associated with Horizon Europe, working as a freelancer or officially registered cultural actor.
Facilitated through a grant of EUR 37,500, mentoring and access to scientific and creative workspaces, up to ten selected artists will form pairs with end-users, small and medium enterprises in the industry, and tackle their local challenges, be it in supermarkets or on biofarms.
With generous support by Horizon Europe, S+T+ARTS carries out the second edition of Hungry EcoCities in 2024/2025, which is subdivided into a closed call for end-users and this second open call for courageous artists. The programme pursues the objective of innovation in Europe’s food value chain, brought about by prototyping experimental AI solutions. Not only does the project deal with local issues, but also highlight the instigating role of artists. The teams of one artist and one end-user will conduct a Paths to Progress Experiment (PPEs) on the local test site.
In the two-tiered application process, artists show exemplary evidence of their work and sketch out a project proposal in accordance with one of the three experimentation directions: Mega Scale, Local Conditions or City+Farming Synergies. 20 pre-selected artists who match themselves with a preferred end-user and their local challenges, will present their idea at the Jury Day, receiving an expense allowance of EUR 1,500 in return. The artists remaining after the second selection will launch the collaboration, develop a prototype, test the digital prototypes by Hungry EcoCities and create their personalized mentoring plan. In the later stages, the prototype will be set up and demonstrated in iterations, opening up new strategies of reducing resource waste.
