Currently the programme S+T+ARTS (Science, Technology and Arts) has three open calls running, focussing on different topics such as water sustainability in coastal areas and port cities, digital development through culture as well as promoting ecologically conscious and human-compatible digital technology.
S+T+ARTS, an initiative of the European Commission, seeks innovation at the intersection of Science + Technology + Arts to confront challenges of sustainability. It hosts lighthouse projects and academies and has provided over 200 residencies and awarded more than 250 S+T+ARTS prizes since 2016.
Call 1) S+T+ARTS 4 WATER II is offering 9-month-residencies followed by an outreach phase of six months for 20 artists from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Slovenia dedicated to water sustainability in coastal areas and port cities. Applicants tailor their proposal to a specific residency location, host and the respective challenges of that region. In this 2nd edition of the programme, artists receive guidance and support from the host and S+T+ARTS, as well as a budget of up to 40.000 EUR.

Call 2) S+T+ARTS EC(H)O promots ecologically conscious and human-compatible digital technology by supporting artists in developing innovative solutions that blend art, science, and technology. The programme offers 10 artists the opportunity to participate in a 13-month residency starting from December 2024. During the residency, artists will receive funding, guidance, access to experts, and participation in various events aimed at accelerating the impact of their projects. The residencies are hosted in Germany, Austria, and France with challenges defined by each Residency Host Institution for the artists to address.

Call 3) S+T+ARTS‘ other open call is one for proposals aiming to foster digital development through culture to face the world’s current big sustainability challenges. Focusing on either Africa or South America, applicants outline a concept connecting the region to Europe and elevating the role of cultural workers in an innovative society. The project should span 15 to 18 months. It encompasses a S+T+ARTS residency, the bestowal of a S+T+ARTS prize as well as sylloges, meaning corpora of knowledge and debates. A funding budget of EUR 2 million is available, which will likely be granted equally to one project in Africa and one in South America.
