Tallinn Design Week

The 16th Tallinn Design Festival DISAINIÖÖ is starting today and will take place until 26 September in Estonia. This year's theme is the extraordinary and life-saving SOS DESIGN focusing on crisis design topics with exhibitions, workshops and discussions.

In the context of a pandemic, the role of crisis design is more important than ever before. And not just in healthcare. There are many global problems that require urgent intervention: the economic crisis, global warming, the energy crisis, poverty, and so on.The Tallinn Design festival aims to draw attention to the role of design in resolving changes and crisis situations in society.

Experts with international crisis experience from all over Europe will speak at the conference. The international exhibition "SOS Design"will show selectively the works of shortlisted designers from the 2020 Global Design Graduate Show taking place in cooperation with the world's only digital platform for university graduates ARTSTHREAD. The exhibition provides excellent solutions from more than 10 countries to curb the worldwide chaos, while also giving hope for the future of our creative industries. The Estonian exhibition of sustainable design "Second Chance" demonstrates products and materials that have gained a second life, thus saving resources and protecting the environment.

The festival program will also include designer talks such as PechaKucha, and "I Am a Designer". The Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design will present the work of the most famous Estonian lighting designer Tarmo Luisk and the legacy of local glass art legend Ivo Lill. The entire program of the festival can be found here.

The design competition "SOS: the house is on fire" is also a part of the festival. The competition is open for activists aged 7-12 and is inspired by the speeches of the climate activist Greta Thunberg. A drawing introducing the idea can be still sent until 30 September. The best ideas will be shared on the festival's social media channels and favorites will be rewarded with prizes.
