Three-month Residency for International Artists at Westwerk, Germany | 28 August 2024

Westwerk in Hamburg, Germany, invites eight professional artists from outside Germany to partake in residencies in 2025 and 2026. One artist per quarter will be selected to pursue a creative project in the provided living and working space and network with Hamburg’s thriving cultural scene. The programme seeks international creatives in the field of film, photography, media or visual arts as well as combinations of these sectors with music, willing to explore the culture metropolis Hamburg and bring the residency to a close with a presentation of their results and a project paper documenting their learnings during the three-month stay.

The Hamburg Ministry for Culture and Media in partnership with Westwerk Artists' Centre carries out the residency. While the Ministry equips the grantees with the financial means, Westwerk e.V. brings artist mentoring to the table and hosts the 68 m² apartment in which the residents stay rent-free. Westwerk is centrally located in inner-city Hamburg, in a relatively vast complex of buildings on Fleetinsel that encompasses further studios, galleries and a small theatre. With art and music events happening regularly, it enables lasting contacts to be made.

On October 17th, an expert jury will announce the residency winners based on a personal statement alongside a short project description as well as selections of their past work. Applicants can request preferred residency periods, but it is not guaranteed that this inclination can be taken into account. Artists will find an agreement with Westwerk in regards to the output format, be it a lecture or a media-based presentation in the framework of another public event. The program includes a fee of 900 € per month, 500 € for the final exhibition and the reimbursement of the return journey expenses.
