Tromsø International Film Festival

The 33rd Tromsø International Film Festival will take place on 16-22 January with a diverse and exciting lineup from around the world, showcasing astonishing films from both contemporary and classic cinema.

This year's opening ceremony will take place at Main Square (Stortorget), Mari Boine will be a special guest performance during the opening ceremony. Festival director Lisa Hoen will welcome everyone to the festival, followed by speakers. The festival will open with the world premiere of ELLOS EATNU – LET THE RIVER FLOW, a powerful and moving drama from the director Ole Giæver.

Every year Tromsø International Film Festival invites musicians to compose new music to films from the silent film era. The silent film ARSENAL (a Soviet silent film by Ukrainian filmmaker Alexander Dovzhenko)with music composed by the North-Norwegian metal band ATTAN, playing together with Ukrainian drummer Boris Ionov and Russian bassist Nikolai Olshansky, will be one of the special screenings during TIFF 2023.

The EAST SIDE STORIES sidebar will screen seven films from the border zones around Russia including; Latvia, Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine. This very sidebar feels more important than ever, given the circumstances of the war in Ukraine. The organisers have decided to not make a general ban on all Russian films, and are looking forward to presenting Captain VolkonogovEscaped to the audience. TIFF has also launched a new sidebar program, ARABICA, that explores and highlights the current situation in the Arab world through seven unique films made by a new generation of arab filmmakers.
